Just a quick question.

I'm not running *any* external services like telnetd, sshd, apached etc (Im purely using linux at the moment as a workstation/desktop). In this instance, would i be correct in thinking a firewall based on iptables would be of no use to me?

The only thing i am running is a samba server but i have configured this to only use my internet NIC (eth1).

Thanks in advance...

A firewall is a good option no matter how many services you are or are not running. Its a Just in case scenario. If its connected to the net, a firewall can't hurt.

I agree with Derango, you dont need to worry about it much, but just using a simple firewall which was included with your distro wouldn't hurt. Since most *nix boxes I know are connected to the internet and run 24/7, it wouldn't be a bad idea.
