My computername is P
I get my ip (192.168.0.2) from a win98se box. Its name is cx123456-a. Its connected to a cablemodem, and our subdomain is something like:
r1-asd-0-1000xx.ym1.on.home.net
Do I have a full host name? what is it?

And wonders why yer asking.
In the context of your localnetwork your hostname is P
In the context of the outside network, you don't exist as a host.
the ip 192.168.x.x is a 'private' network, and is invisible in terms of the internet.
As far as any system on the outside is concerned, someone surfing from this box will appear as the box that is actually connected to the internet, cx123456-a.r1-asd-0-1000xxym1.on.home.net.
.. although, since I work for 'em I realize that you've mangled the @home address.
This is known as IP masqerading and is how you can share the internet with other computers.

If you don't know, and I'm being nice, you have about a week's worth of reading to do
nonstop.
find the linux LAN How-to to start.
or the Linux Networking How-to.
best of luck.

Since you are using a private ip then basically your hostname is going to be that of the win98SE machine, just like Lorithar explained.

Are you trying to configure an ethernet card? I think a lot of @home services use DHCP to configure their addys.

When connecting via DHCP, what the safest way to give yourself a hostname so that GNOME and other programs don't complain?

thanks Lorithar, +all others kind pointers
SuOrangeMan's post is exactly why I was asking :)
dhcp is working great for my ethernet card, and net connection, but gnome apps do complain about my hostname, and I wonder if weirdness and frustration with Mandrake's Update/urpmi/rpmdrake might be related as well.
My hostname is P... I think gnome is looking for more.

I'm not sure what that's all about because I'm on ADSL and haven't had a hitch yet. When I used to use Mandrake, I remember RPMDrake being buggy as hell, and it almost never worked. RPMs are like that by their very nature. If it says a whole lot about conflicts and dependency issues left and right, it's best to just leave it alone if you're a relative newbie...those things can lead to....complications *shudder*

Oooh oooh! Just thought of something. See if you have a file called /etc/hostname or something like that. If you do, tell us what it says. You might want to save a version of it as backup, then start screwing around with your hostname. You can always type "linux single" at the login to do maintenance if you kill the box :)
