My motherboard, GA-7VAXP, has built in sound. Something by via, using AC97. I added in an SBLive!, prior to the installation.
Now, I'd like my default sound card to be the SBLive!, which is configured correctly, but it does not give any output, only the onbaord sound does.
what has gone wrong.

I don't know, but I have a comment:
It took me 4 months to get that onboard sound working!

what did you use, Slackware 1?
well, if it's any consolation, it only 'works.' it will play mp3's, but all I get for any other sort of sounds is scratchy blips.

Did you disable the onboard soundcard in the bios or by jumpers on the motherboard?
You could try adding
alias sound-slot-# off
to /etc/modules.conf
Look in
dmesg | less
for the correct sound-slot-# (number) for the onboard soundcard.
