I have some issues with my Digital Camera. I have a Canon Ixus V2 and use gphoto2 (gphoto2lib, gphoto2, gtkam).
I got it working but not really the way i want.
I run slackware 8.0 but with most software updated. i.e. kernel 2.4.20, glib 2 etc.
When I connect the camera the kernel recognises it and passes over to hotplug. hotplug (usb.agent) reports: no modules for USB product 4a9/3065/1
The system (/proc/bus/usb/devices) reports no drivers loaded for the camera.
When I switch gtkam on however it works. And driver usbdevfs is used for connecting to the camera.
The problem is that gtkam tends to crash alot, and most when downloading pics.
The thing is that when I compiled gphoto2lib I chose to compile drivers for Ixus. What I wonder is:
Are those drivers for the system, modules, or just for gtkam?
And if I can modprobe them, where are they?
All hints welcome!

Have a look through these JL forum search results for 'usbdevfs' (http://justlinux.com/forum/search.php?s=&action=showresults&searchid=669114&sortby=lastpost&sortorder=descending) to see if any have anything on digital cameras and what modules/drivers are required.

IIRC gphoto drivers are completely seperate from any kernel modules there may be - you won't be able to modprobe them.
The storage aspect (usbdevfs, etc) is different again, because then the camera is acting as a storage device.
You may be best off using the commandline options for gphoto2, rather than gtkam, for downloading them if it's causing issues.

Note the time this thread was posted? I noticed it just before I logged off last night and was hoping some of our camera/gphoto2 users would be able to help. Oh well. :(

Ok, I got the answer I needed: That gphoto drivers are not kernel modules.
Still the strange thing with this is the fact that Ixus V2 is NOT supposed to be able to act as storage device (card reader) according to Canon. But since this seems to work, I'm just happy, cause now I won't need a separate card reader.
But why won't the system use usbdevfs as driver directly when it connects? And if it acts as storage device, shouldn't I be able to mount the fs for a probably much more basic and stable transfer without separate software.

Like a smartcard?
Try this JL forum search result for 'mount card fstab' (http://justlinux.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=106330&highlight=keywords+mount+card+fstab).

It seems I'm stuck with a buggy gtkam for now (or gphoto2).
can't mount /dev/sda1. just gives me: not a valid block device.
And i still wonder what actually causes the driver binding that doesn't accur until I start gtkam.

Unfortunately that error could be attributed to many reasons.
It would be best if you went through these JL forum search results for 'valid block device' (http://justlinux.com/forum/search.php?s=&action=showresults&searchid=670824&sortby=lastpost&sortorder=descending) to see if any pertain to your exact problem instead of us posting... try this, ok then try this now. Still doesn't work? See if this will. :)
