Fire Wall ? on testing

I'm Running libranet2.8 with comcast cable which is hook to a Netgear Router...(running port :8080

The ? is do I need to fire up? Netgear is telling me I do not need to, for no one can get in... Does some one want to try or is there a way to find out how safe it really is?

My Ip is 24.118.46.25 that will send you to my server and web page....:D ;)
