Howdy,

I'm going broadband early next week and my ISP is IOL (http://www.iol.ie) . Unfortunately techie support don't know their arse from their elbows and are very unhelpfull. I eventually dragged it out of a guy today that the modem will be a Zyxel Prestige 630. It's a usb modem and it uses ATM.

I have a userspace driver from here (http://eciadsl.flashtux.org). The driver only supports the 630-41 and not the 630-11. I have read on an irish linux mailing list that the modem is in fact the latter model. I have read somewhere that I could just write a connection script and that I don't really need a driver for the modem. Is this true?

I would really appreciate any help at all, because I really don't want to fork out even more money on a modem if I can use the one given to me for free.

ps, my distro is Debian 3.0 woody and my kernel is 2.4.18-k7

is your isp even PPPoE, you may not need the drivers or anything at all, just use the ethernet port (if available) and let the modem do the work, if not you can probably use program like rpppoe to connect, or kppp with pppoe support to dial in

Reading up on the specs (http://www.zyxel.co.uk/product/model.php?indexcate=1022046269&indexcate1=1021877946&indexFlagvalue=1021873638) , it says it supports "PPP over Ethernet ( PPPoE, RFC 2516) ". So does this mean that I can plug the modem into an ethernet port on my computer and use rppppoe to connect?

If so, how woulf I install ethernet on my computer? Do I need to buy an ethernet card? Are ethernet cards expensive?

Thanks for your help, it's much appreciated!

look just guessing, the modem does all the work, it will connect and everything on its own when you plug it in, all you need to do is plug in through ethernet, you can pick up an ethernet card for about $9-20 us, an easy way to tell is to call your isp, and ask them (what is your login information or how do i dial in) if they laugh, you know the answer

great! there's still hope! i got all the login information i need from another forum. those techie support guys are pathetic. i remember ringing up and asking if the protocol being used was pppoe or pppoa and the person said "Ugghh, your browser's home page will be iol.ie."

thanks alot dudes, you just saved me about 150 euro!

if its tradional dsl, you wont have any dialup information at all, you just plug the modem into your phone line it will flash for a few, then when its ready your golden
