Hi,

I got an ECS 929 desknote with sis 315 VGA controller running RH 7.2 with custom kernel 2.4.20-18.7. I am planning to install X window.
I did some dig up on the support of sis315 on this kernel and found on Thomas Winischhofer site that the native X driver for this sis VGA controller might not be available even on the latest kernel. And of course he provides a native driver for the sis 315 on his site.

So I have the option to use Thomas' driver or to use frame buffer to support GUI on my desknote. So the question I have for you guys: which option should I go for ?

I heard that frame buffer may cause the X window to be slow, so better to go with the native driver if possible, but on the other I heard about all the wonderful resolution and depth that frame buffer can offer.

Can anybody help me in giving their opinions to my dilemma ?

Thanks

yeah, unless the driver is pretty much perfect and fully supported, i wont use framebuffer, it gets very choppy and is usually slower than native, but like i said, if you think the driver is worth a crap, you can always try it
