I was trying to get some of the songs of the newest metallica cd yesterday and put them on my laptop so I don't have to carry around the cd.. Anyway, when I try to rip the files, they come up as 80 (or more) wav files... is there a program that will encode them and make them mp3's?

One word: LAME.
Not criticizing the thread, it's just the name of the program. :D
I did a search at freasmeat.net:

Why bother encoding MP3 when you can have OGG? ;)

Im still confused, are you really talking about the encoder or the quality of the new metallica album?

I would completely agree with you, if my 10gig MP3 Player worked with that....
