i've downloaded linux kernel and i'm wondering if its possible to install this kernel on my system and then install Xfree86 and everything, rather than getting any linux distro and istalling that. May be its possible to burn kernel on cd and boot the installation?
Please help
Thanx

yes you can compile the kernel it should work with what you have (I say should because more often than not when there is a problem its because of you rather than the code!! beware!) :)
as for xfree86, the kernel and the x server are independant so if you do want to upgrade it go ahead but like the kernel there is a bit of voodoo magic involved! ;) so back up and read the help files and man pages before
and backup
can't help with the burning sorry I know to little about making the cdrom bootable to be of any use

Check out LFS (http://linuxfromscratch.org), they do what you want to do. You are going to need a few other things to go along with that kernel to get it too work. Good Luck!
