I'm trying to install the gnome-libs because it seems that a lot of programs require this. I go to do this, and it has tons of dependancies, well, I get to ORBit, and installed it. Rebooted and everything, and it still says during the configuration that it can not find ORBit. Any ideas?

I have the very same problem! I've tried every way I can think of to get it to compile. I even uninstalled ORBit2 and installed ORBit 0.xx to see if that would help. I also tried to copy the files (orbit-idl-2 and orbit2-config) to orbit-idl and orbit-config so that the ./configure file would find the files, but it gave me a looong compile-time error. I would love an answer.
Same problem here, using Redhat Enterprise Linux ES 2.4.21-32.0.1. There seems to be a hierarchy of dependencies needed by gnome-libs-1.4.4.2.90-34.1. I need gnome-libs for Oracle Enterprise. After I install a package (rpm -i <package name>) and verify its installation (rpm -q <package name>), the next package I install, that needs the previously installed package replies as if I did not install the first package. For instance, I installed audiofile, verified its installation, then I attempted to install audiofile-devel. The message returned by the X terminal reads "audiofile = 0.2.3 is needed by audiofile-devel-0.2.3-3. When I verify audiofile's installtion, I recieve audiofile-0.2.3-7.1. Any help is greatly appreciated.

My suggestion is to get the install cds out and use the add programs option or some other distros can use apt-get/yanc, etc. Install the gnome desktop and then upgrade if need be. Gnome libs by themselves are difficult in resolving all the dependencies one-by-one.
