those of you who have tried a few of them, what would you recommend?

I'd get the official Debian 2.2r4 release, but past experiences with it (well, previous 2.2 releases) have led me to believe that it isn't all that friendly (installer-wise).

I would also like a distro that I'll be able to make copies of and hand off to my friends so as to get them more interested in Linux. I'm thinking of Progeny, or perhaps Connectiva, which seems to use a combo of APT and RPM, or something...I dunno. I have a cd-burner of my own so making the cds isn't really that much of an issue.

I wish I could find a distro that's easy to install, easy to keep updated, and something that isn't too hard for newbies to get into. (I'll personally try out just about any *nix, but I want to get some of my friends using it, too)

I have tried Progeny 6 times.
3 installs went great, very easy GUI install no problems.
2 wouldn't work at all. I'm sure this was because it couldn't identify hardware properly during first phase. I think it was the video card.
1 went fine but didn't setup X properly, everything else worked great.

Progeny does a few things different from Debian. Grub vs LILO, Gnome vs WindowMaker.

I find myself using the Debian disks.
I give Progeny away to first timers.

Good Luck,
