Where does JustLinux.com get it's money to stay in operation?
I realize that there is advertisement revenue, but is there other funding? Is it privately funded? Do members contribute? Did I just miss a thread that explains this?
I looked around here a little, but didn't see anything about it. (uh... it's wine night) ;)
Just curious.
Thanks...

The moderators all contribute $$$ to the running of JL. All except DMR as he's too damn cheap. :p
:D
The ads of course and perhaps contributions from other companies.
Brian ???
Do members contribute?
I'll PM you with my P.O Box. :)

But I have to keep 'contributing' as I don't want to walk the plank, as I've mentioned my allergic reactions to shark bites :)
You %#&*@&@s!!
Just stab me in my sleep, why don't you?

Must be those other moderators editing my posts on me. You know I would never say anything detrimental (sorry David, big word 'bad' then) about you. :o

Is it possible for regular members to make contributions? I'd have no problem making a donation; this site and the people that populate it have helped me out of quite a few pickles.

Your contribution would be to help out the other members as much as you can. That is what we all do.
:)
Thought I had better say something before David has Skithextrm sending him money. :p

By the time the $1 arrives from Canada, it's worth nothing in the conversion. You end up owing me. :)
Besides I don't quite make that much at JL since all the complaints about me. Anymore and I'll be paying Brian instead of you. :(

*psst!*, hey Mike- like the new addition to my sig?

I already sent you a PM about that.
Of course you may not be able to read the PM with your account banned. :p
Don't you have any moderating duties to perform? What am I paying you $1 for? :)

how much could you guys have to possibly pay per month, I mean web hosting isn't that much these days.
BTW: I am willing to give some money if you let me know who/where to send it to

We have to pay $0.50 for each thread we reply to. $1 for each subject we manually edit and $2 for each thread we move or remove.
We've sent a collection agency after DMR. :D
Thanks for the offer, but we cannot accept any forum of payment. Just continue to help out in the forums as much as you can.

Single AMD 1.3 GHz Processor
256MB DDR RAM
40GB EIDE Drive
30GB Burstable Bandwidth
24x7 Fanatical Support™
Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES 2.1 Preinstalled
RackWatch Basic
Monthly $270.00
That is the most basic package from Rackspace...Sorry, but I don't want to pay that...My personal site is about $12/month from OLM.net and it is very dry on features I would like (shared virtual servers also suck) I don't want to guess how much it costs to run this site a month

Even that basic Rackspace package very likely wouldn't be nearly enough power to handle everybody. Sure, the posts are stored in a relational database now (back when the boards used UBB it would have been INSANE to even try that), but that still takes processor time, especially when posts start getting huge...
The site, as it is, is probably hosted on a huge server farm, not just "a really nice server".

Just out of curiocity, why are you guys against personal contributions in monetary terms? Is that what Internet.com says? Or a lack of being able to regulate where the money would go to?

Everyone here (mods and members) are volunteers. That is the way it has always been.
If you want to help pay, click on the ad links and help out in the forums.
JL owned by Jupitermedia/Internet.com and supports this site by the ads you see.
If anyone wants to contribute money, donate to a local charity. Canadian/American cancer society is one I'm all for.

What would happen if I sent a letter to:
Jupitermedia Headquarters
23 Old Kings Highway South
Darien, CT 06820
with a $20 check saying "mdwatts, over there at the ole Justlinux.com intraweb site told me to send yall this here money to take up the cost of his ungodly amount of postings, and the bandwidth/server costs he causes"
mdwatts
07-03-2003, 06:35 PM
Thanks, BUT I'm sure all involved would rather you donate the $20 to a charity.
Brian Broffitt might get a hold of it and take his wife out to dinner. :p

Come on David... I was trying to be polite.
I already sent a PM to Gertrude with a rough estimate of my personal fees. I won't have to drive that old 95 Sunfire anymore. :p
<edit>
BTW... Dinner is nearly ready. JL is all yours. :)
