How do I set a essage of the day, like on my uni unix system?
I want it so that those telnetting into my box see a message when they log in.

Add it to /etc/motd use plain text and you are good to go.

Watch out for scripts in your init that will overwrite it. I think I saw one in Slackware that will overwrite it with the kernel version. I don't know about other distros.
