Where does the Linux kernel originally come from?

Quick Quiz. As i have cleverly discovered that 80% of all the people around here (bbs) are from America, and rest pretty much around the globe. I was wondering that how many Linux users know the origin of Linux kernel? The man who owns "linux" name etc.?

(i'm from the same country as Linux, so yes i know the history)
