I have a HP 3200C scanner. I have sane backends installed, and now there are upgrades available from sourceforge. I have downloaded the files and am trying to install, but fail dependencies.
I have looked under mandrake control center for the dependencies, but they are not there, or I'm looking for the wrong thing.
Here is the error I get.
libsane.1 is needed by sane-backends-1.0.12.3.7umax_pp
Any thoughts on how a stupid newbie sorts this out?
The backends I have installed are 1.0.11-5.mdk

First ask yourself-"Do I really need to upgrade?" If so, look at the Xsane homepage and it will tell you which dependencies you'll need. Or you may find rpms on :
RPMFind.net (http://rpmfind.net/linux/RPM/)
You'll probably need to update sane-frontend and xsane also. Have fun!

Thank-you for your reply. I will look into your suggestions. I must admit I'm still struggling to try and understand how Linux software is level dependant.
The backends that come with Mandrake 9.1 are 1.0.11. The issue for me is my HP 3200C does not work out of the box with this code. I did some research and found the Sane-umax_pp code was available. The HP3200C is a parallel port scanner, and is the same hardware as the Umax 1200 scanner.
Do I "need" to upgrade? No, I just want to get my scanner working under Mandrake 9.1. I would be very happy if I could get it to work with 1.0.11 backends and associated frontends. The biggest problem I'm struggling with are the not very clear instructions on how to make it work. If anyone with experience cares to comment I would appreciate it. Here is the link to the instructions. Remember I'm new to Linux.

I looked at that site and it looks like they have the rpm built for Mandrake, there should be a libsane rpm on the site I told you about.
As far as configuring the port, you should be allright following
their directions. It is a hassle compared to Windows but you will learn something about how scanners work and how your computer communicates with peripherals. Remember, you will have to do most of the configuring as root.
Now to bring up another can of worms- if you get through this and the scanner still is not working after double-checking everything, you may have to reconfigure the kernel to support parallel port peripherals that are not printers. In Mandrake hopefully that is already configured. If not, more reading!
I don't want to discourage you- everyone goes through the same thing. Remember, your glass is half-full, not half empty. You are becoming an advanced computer user.

O.K. this is what I have tried. First of all, I currently have the following components installed, and my HP3200C does not work at all in Mandrake 9.1.
libsane-hpoj0-0.90-4mkk
libsane1-1.0.11-5mdk
libsane1-devel-1.0.11-5mdk
sane-backends-1.0.11-5mdk
sane-fronends-1.0.10-1mdk
saned-1.0.11-5mdk
xsane-0.90-2mdk
xsane-gimp-0.90-2mdk
I have downloaded and tried to install the rpm's for the umax-pp scanner. I tried both update and install, both fail complaining of dependencies. I tried to install and upgrade with the above 1.0.11 installed, also removed the above packages, and I could not install the 1.0.12 packages. I followed the instructions on Sourceforge, where the rpm's are located. When I removed the packages, Open Office was also removed, not sure why, but it was toast.
I've got only 6 months experience with Linux. I have got all other pieces of hardware working except my scanner. As I understand it, the 1.0.12 backends and libsane 1.0.12 are "patched" to work with my HP3200C.
If I can not get the 1.0.12 rpm's to install because of dependencies I can't firure out, is there some way of patching teh insalled 1.0.11 fiiles? I would really prefer to install the rpm's instead of the patching, considering my lack of experience and knowledge.

Here is the error messages I get when I try to upgrade.
libsane.1 is needed by saned-1.0.12-3.7umax_pp
libsane.so.1 is needed by saned-1.0.11-5mdk
libsane.so.1 is needed by xsane-0.90-2mdk
libsane.so.1 is needed by xsane-gimp-0.90-2mdk
libsane.so.1 is needed by sane-frontends-1.0.10-1mdk
I'm totally confused by these error messages. Can any one shed some light on this for me?
Where so I get an rpm for libsane.1 and libsane.so.1?
