When the LILO boot loader starts, it only gets as far as LIL then does "-" then freezes. So I've been booting from floppy, being too lazy to sort it. Can anyone point me in the direction of what to do with this corrupt whatever? I'm running RH6.2 on a box that is just linux, so it uses LILO and boot straight into Linux.

I am a newbie so please bare with me. I hope this will help you.
What are the contents of your /etc/lilo.conf file? Do you have a SCSI hard drive?
You said that you installed Linux as a sole operating system but did you install the boot sector in the MBR or the /boot partition?
Hope to hear from you. I will try to figure out more possibilities for the errors.

Ta for replying. I'll have a look at lilo.conf when I get home. It isn't a SCSI HD. Boot sector is under /boot.

Maybe you could try reinstalling linux and put lilo in the mbr. Let's see if it will work for you, since you are not adding any OS anymore. Good luck!

I've had this happen to some friends of mine who had to install RH6.2 on their systems for school. They problem was never with how they had their lilo.conf file set up. The only way they ever got around it was by reintalling linux. I suppose you should try removing lilo, boot up with a boot disk and run /sbin/lilo. I don't know if that'll work, but it's worth a shot.

I think the problem is with older version of lilo not correctly recognizing the hard drive.Try to get the newest lilo (21.6 i belive),it can be found on freshmeat ][ (http://www.freshmeat.net).And in case you get problems with compilation get the bin86 source too.Hope this helps.

I reinstalled a few weeks ago, and it hasn't worked since, - don't know if it's LILO not recognising the HD though, as it is the same version of LILO and the same HD as the previous installation.
I'll try running /sbin/lilo.
I looked last night for lilo.conf and couldn't even find it, probably being stupid. (me, that is ). I was in a hurry, so didn't try upper case for LILO and stuff like that.
When I did the reinstallation it hung at the very final stage....maybe the lilo didn't get properly configured. :p

You can find lilo.conf in /etc. You will need root privileges to edit it. Or you can use LinuxConf.

Before you reinstalled linux, did you remove lilo from the MBR. I'm not very sure about whether this will affect your reinstallation but I remember this part about removing lilo from Redhat's documentation about removing Redhat.

Hope this helps... :p
