I run Mandrake 8.0 and windows98 in my box.

The adsl connection runs fine with windows, but for some mysterious reasons, it stopped working under linux.
I really can't recall what change I may have made between the last time adsl worked and the first time I found out I couldn't connect.

Not wanting to bother you all, I tried to reinstall mandrake all over, hoping that the default settings would be fine but no luck.

I run adsl-setup many times, I tried with mandrake control center where my internet card is auto detected... it worked fine the first time when I upgraded from a simple modem connection to adsl but now it doesn't...

this gets me very puzzled.

Additionaly, and this may or may not be a clue, I can no longer run the mandrake control center or the software install software. In the console, I can su to root without a problem, but if I click on the desktop for example on the mandrake control center, the usual dialog box will come up asking for the root password, which I enter properly but then nothing comes up after.

I tried to run linuxconf from the console, and here is what I got:
# linuxconf
Error message from remadmin :Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Error message from remadmin :Xlib: Client is not authorized to connect to Server
Error message from remadmin :
Error message from remadmin :Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: :0.0

This may be a clue too but I personaly haven't got one (a clue, I mean).

As I said, my network card (d-link dfe 530tx) got recognized and used properly before.

It's been a week that i am struggling with that and I haven't been able to download my mail in a week.
I'd hate to go back to outlook express (and its viruses) to read my mail.

Could anyone give me any advice that would lead to the solution?

Thanks ever so much:
I always get wonderful help from this forum.

blessings,

Anguo.

I'm sorry I can't really help you with this because I don't know Mandrake, and Mandrake differs wildly from the standard way of doing many things.

Linuxconf is definitely the easiest way to get things set up for an inexperienced user, though.

The Linuxconf error is because you tried to run Linuxconf at a text console when it runted to run in X. Try running Linuxconf from an Xterm and it may work better for you. There's also a way to run Linuxconf in the console, but I can't tell you what it is because I haven't used Linuxconf in over a year.

I hope that gets you started.

I logged off win98 and started linux to try this.
Thanks to you I have been able to run linuxconf from an xterm.
I have tried to change one or two things that looked the most obvious to me, but to no avail.
Therefore back to windows :-( !!!

In any case, I'll try to investigate more the web and the documentation to see if I can come up with something else.

If someone else has a clue, please do tell me, but anyway I'm going to try to investigate further.

thanks, always,

Anguo
