im running redhat 7.0 and it wont detect my modem... erg

its not a winmodem... its a USR 56k PCI int FAX modem model 3CP5610

im running windoze98 on the same machine and in windows the com port for this modem is com 5, irq 11

i looked at /proc/PCI and found an "unrecognized device" using IRQ 11 (in windows the modem is using com 5 and IRQ 11 so i imagine that this is the modem) it says that the IO info is 0xb000 [0xb001]

i read somewhere that linux will only load com1-4 (ttys0-ttys4) at bootup... will setserial allow me to add ttys4(com5) to the bootup process?

if im on the wrong track let me know

i also tried making a new entry in the kernel config (dummy irq=11 io=0xb000)... im just playing around.... so stop laughing ;)

any ideas?
am i on the right track?

You might be able to add an entry in /etc/inittab. I've got a multi-port board and this is where I had to set up additional serial terminals. You'll need to check the man page and read up on the termcap file to get everything setup right.

Once you've edited inittabs type "init q" from the cli and you should be all set.
