Running Redhat 8 on Bluecurve (Gnome 2).

When I right click the hat, there's no edit menu option. When I open nautilus and try to move, copy, delete, basically make any changes, I get the error message: Error "Unsupported operation" while deleting "applications:/// Extras/Other/.directory".

Kinda putting a damper on my ability to keep my menus cleaned up or add stuff in. =)

Does it with and without root access.

it's probably a side effect of Red Hat customizing Gnome.

It is... try Ximian Desktop 2 for RH... menu editing will be enabled by default if you switch... there are other ways too... Let me look for the site...

Menu-editing in RedHat 9
To enable menu editing per user config (via nautilus), you need to open a terminal and do the following:
su -
<give root password>
cd /etc/gnome-vfs-2.0/modules
cp default-modules.conf default-modules.conf-no-menu-editing
cp default-modules.conf.with-menu-editing default-modules.conf

For any user you want to have the right to edit their menu, you also need to do this as the user:

cd ~/.gnome2/vfolders
cp /etc/X11/desktop-menus/applications.menu applications.vfolder-info

When gnome-panel is restarted (via logout/login or kill) the user will be able to see the changes they have made to their menu.

This is for RH9 but it should work if these files and dirs exist...

Ok, I don't have a file called: default-modules.conf.with-menu-editing

Hmmm...

Also, I can edit the KDE menus if I start it up instead of Gnome. Unfortunatly I don't really care all that much for KDE, so would prefer to stay with gnome.

Anyone?

well, as I stated that was for RH9... guess they changed up Gnome... a way to cheat is to look for a dir called "etc/X11/applnk" ... if this is there then there should be a series of folders... Internet, Applications, etc. You can add to the menu by adding launchers to these folders... Or switch to Ximian Desktop 2... it's free and it works with red hat 8.0

Not familar with Ximian. You have a link handy? I'm not seeing it on freshmeat.

Downloading Ximian now.. Better not suck!! hehe ;)

Looks like a cool WM. Very smooth and low key, but has good functionality. Thanks for the tip.. ;)

Ok, so I got Ximian installed and it's all nice and all, but there's still something wrong when I try to edit the menus.

I'm able to delete icons, move them around, add them, etc, but the changes won't show up in the menu. So I log out and log back in and everything I've done is gone and it's back to the default.

So what's the trick?

This should work... Not sure what is going on... all I can suggest is maybe upgrading to red hat 9 since it works for me there... which you could do w/o totally losing all of your data but... I had a problem with adding stuff initially but I kept messing with the vfolders that I told you about and it started working... I added a launcher and then changed a cuple of icons and then logged out and back in... once they took I haven't had a problem... sorry my solutions don't seem to be working... it's really crappy the RH disables menu editing by default... b/c I really like the distro overall...

Well, thanks for the advice.. I might toy around with it tonight a bit, but if I can't get it working I might give Gentoo or slackware another run. After installing Ximian I've got a ton of duplicate programs installed and it's sucking up a lot of space. Probably just rebuild with a min build to start off with and go from there.

http://www.bluethingy.com/linux/rh8menu.html

found this but it looks a little complicated... you shouldn't have duplicate programs with ximian... the ximian menu should've replaced the older versions... kind of stupid question but... you did install for RH8.0, right?

Gentoo is cool but it takes a long time to install... probably worth it though I gave up on installing b/c I have an amd laptop and I'm paranoid it's going to overheat or something... gets really, really hot!
