Hi,

i downloaded all the 20+ files for upgrading to KDE2.. but being the linux newbie and used to windows i am, im used to just clicking on "setup.exe" :) ... so, wich of the files should i install first? do they have to be installed in any particular order?

Can the installation go wrong and mess up my Desktop, too? in other words: should i just leave this alone until i'm a little more experienced? :)

thanks!

The order in which you need to install the packages is:

kdesupport
kdelibs
kdebase

The rest can go in any order. Make sure you have the latest version of Qt before you do anything. Reply if you need more help.

By the way, you don't need 20+ files. You need the 3 that I mentioned and then any others you wish to add. (koffice, kdegames, kdepim, etc..)

Thanks for answering!

Um, so how do i find out:

1.- if i have Qt installed
2.- if its the latest version

In case none of the 2 apply:

1.- where do i get Qt
2.- is it an RPM?

Thanks a lot! :)

I'm not sure how to find out what version you currently have, but if you're currently using KDE 1.x, chances are you don't have the latest one. You can find a sufficiently current one in the directory with the rest of the KDE files, I have discovered. It is called qt-2.2.2-2.i386.rpm. I have never installed KDE with RPM's, so there may be something you need to do that I'm not aware of. What distro are you using?

Hi!

thanks for answering.. im using red hat 7.0 (heard it was full of bugs; been working fine for me so far)

I looked , and i downloaded qt-2.2.2-i386 also... so, should i first install this rpm, and then the KDE ones?

How much of a risk is it to upgrade?? can i screw up my current kde??

thanks a lot

Yes, you need to install Qt before KDE. As I said before, I've never installed this from RPM, so I may not be the most qualified person to answer your question, but...

It is possible to install KDE2 without messing up your existing KDE installation. You can have them both installed at the same time and choose which one you want to load. Instructions on doing so can be found at this website:

KDE1 and KDE2 (http://www.kde.org/kde1-and-kde2.html)

Keep in mind that you will need to install KDE2 in a seperate directory from KDE1. I'm not sure how you would do this with RPM's. I'm also not sure if the new version of Qt will work with KDE1. According to KDE's website, all you need to do is install the RPM's and it will take care of everything for you. I've never tried it, so I can't say how easy it is. In general, I would say that if you're not prepared to lose everything, don't upgrade until you're more experienced.

I'm wondering if there's someone else on this board who's more experienced with Red Hat than I am.
