i was recently installing mandrake 7.2 with reiserfs ( i wanted to test it out) and i was setting a 32 MB /boot (resier) partition, a 128 MB swap, and the rest (some 3.5 GB) / (resier)
it gave me errors, so i took out the /boot and made it ext2.
does reiserfs have trouble with the boot partition?
also, will i have any trouble with reiserfs if i try to upgrade to kernel 2.4.1?
I'm just kinda playing around here, but i'd like it to work

I don't know if it is ReiserFS or Mandrake, but I had a simliar problem during the installation of Mandrake 7.2 (kernel 2.2.17). I could only choose ReiserFS for one large root partition, but I could only leave swap in ext2.
---edit---
Also, I personally don't feel comfortable using different filesystems...like ext2 for boot, ReiserFS for data. But if it works for you, good. ;)

I just started using reiserfs the other day and I have a clean reiserfs partition and the reiser information is taking up 32 MB without anything on the partition, so you might be able to make /boot a little bigger and it might work. Also, I had a problem using loadlin where it couldn't find my root partition if it was reiser so /boot might have to be ext2 to work.

The Reiser FS has a problem with file sizes less than 128MB, I think it's 128MB.... anyhow I got the same thing when I first installed Reiser on my /boot. I use a 7MB /boot and that is too small for Reiser, the rest of my partitions - swap are Reiser and run just fine! :D

<correction>
Yes, you might run into one problem when using kernel 2.4.1.Linux will mount your reiserfs partition (made under 2.2.xx) using 3.5.xx hash format which will slow performance under 2.4.xx kernel and may have other anomalies (see their mailing list ).
There is two developement trees of reiserfs one for kernels 2.2.xx (3.5.xx) and second for 2.4.x (3.6.xx) their format utils differ.Fore more info see ReiserFS page (http://www.reiserfs.org).Hope this helps.
<sorry for confusion to those who read this thread before>

You need a newer version of Grub, CVS preferably. There has been a few problems like this that have been solved with CVS Grub on UseNet.

Interesting, I have ben using Reiserfs since MDK7.1. I never bothered with a /boot partionon my Desktop but I made a 30mb reiserfs partion. Also I have never had a problem with my partions with any kernel even though they are the default has for MDK 7.2.
The one thing that is advised is that your boot partion (/boot or /) be mounted withthe option notails.Also i don't know about Grub as i always use the real thing- LILO.

I am using reiserfs with MD7.2, I made a /boot using ext2fs, then i made the rest of my partitions using reiserfs, I tried using reiserfs as a boot partition but it never worked.
If you intend to upgrade the kernel to 2.4.0 or better, then you have to patch with a patch from reiserfs, also required are - ksymoops-2.4.0 and modutils-2.4.1.
