Daemons on my Linux box

Hi!
I'm just a newbie. I left Windoze a month ago and I am satisfied with my RH9.

Just out of curiousity, why do programs running in my box called daemons? Sounds scary to me...:D

Demons (http://www.msmguest.h1.ru/okultizm/demons.jpg) are alot differnt then a daemons (http://webreference.com/perl/tutorial/9/) .

Good answer, Getrude, but in languages other than English the difference between the two words isn't as obvious or can't be seen at all, so that can be confusing.

Like in German you use the same word for both meanings (or use the English word to be on the safe side). :)

Now I'm enlightened. Thanks for the info. Now, I am more comfortable working on my box knowing that there are dependable daemons and not pesky demons. (I think its the other OS called W.....s that has demons!)
