newbe sound Questions

just installed mandrake 7.2 on a E machine
celron 400 with 128 ram everything is working well but I cant get any sound.
Harddrake shows crystalclear Soundfusion audio accelerator model CS 4610/11 Kernel module snd-card-cs461x not sure how much of this info is usefull... PS im like a real newbe 3 days old so please step by step.

Are you logged in as root or as a regular user when you try to hear sound?

As a rule I try never to run as root, no sound as root or user also I have tested it with all the defalt sound programs with this instalation. one error message I have gotten isconnection to sound server failed make sure artsd is really runningnot sure how to do this :confused:

It's all very usefull. :)

What it means is that it recognized your card and it has a driver for it. The question is whether it recognized it correctly. What is your sound card? I assume that it recognized it correctly because it trust the kernel guys...

What happens? does it
a) give an error mesage? This means your kernel is not set up right. Tell us the mesg.
b) play some static stuff? This means that it's working... You already said it didn't.
c) wait for a while without doing anything. Then put you back on command prompt? This means that it's working but the volume is too low or your speakers are disconnected etc.

Also as root type lsmod and tell us what it says.
