Okay, I seem to be making headway here, but not much. MY favorite microslave has seen Knoppix at work on his own beloved computer. After an intense search of his drive to be sure Linux didn't "infect" his box, he seemed to be satisfied.

Unfortunately, the stakes were raised. Now, he insists that linux is pointless because the knoppix cd wouldn't allow him to run his off the wall benchmarks to see which was faster. (This means playing games, to him, and because knoppix includes only basic games, linux isn't any good.)

Unlike before, windows may not be better, but it's what "everybody uses". I feel guilt at this, because I'm the jerk that got him started in computers, but now he insists that he's master digital, or something similar.

That's beside the point. Actually, there's no point to this post, except to mention that no matter the improvements in linux, MSer's only see the billions in MS's somewhat twisted accounting practices. Innovations don't matter. MS will crush all, like they always have in the past, and Linux is just next in line.

Eventually, all will be MS, and there is no point even bothering with another OS. It's sick to me, but I'm a linux fan, because Linux made my work enjoyable again. MS just tried to minimize (in factory terms, QS9000) my skills to replace experience with a peice of high priced software. (Ironically, this is the same claim they hold against Open Source, that it will commoditize software, making intelligent people pointless.)

The killer point was that despite the fact that Mozilla rendered his needed web pages perfectly (while IE rendered them at half-screen size), despite the fact that I can run Knoppix off a damn cd, all he can do it complain about what it can't do, mostly because Linux isn't MS. (He didn't know what OpenGL was, directx is the only "standard" graphics language).

Sorry for the rant, but you folks are probably used to it by now. I'm mostly blowing off steam because I want to help my friend, but he refuses to even look at Linux.

If he has an nvidia video card, try the morphix game module or jollix. Both work like Knoppox but feature more games. I think both have WineX so you can play Half-life and CS and such if they're installed in a Fat32 partition of his windows system. They also come with UT2k3 demo. But keep in mind the OS is on a CD and so its gonna be slower when it needs to load stuff into ram than the windows installed on his HDD.

I once lived in a group home, and the wise old woman who ran the place frequently used these words (mostly towards me):

"Convince a fool against his will -the fool remaineth still."

Yes, i know what you mean. I have a lot of friends that used to say that i was going mad, learning a new OS, reading all those books we find interesting and helpful. However times are changing and they are becoming interested in Linux. They start asking questions, seeing magazines writing about Linux... and it seems they are awakening from a bad dream. We have time from our side, and M$ will have to fight us all to destroy Linux, and we are so many, ... and besides we are not a company, we are a PROUD community that grows on trust and pride to be different. Always remember.... no one owns the world, not even M$.

I dont know about the use of the CDROM because it might slow down the system even if the drive is a fast one.

Every single OS or software who has stood their ground, everyone who has fought microsoft has died. But where they have failed, Linux will succeed.

Why!?

Because Linux is Teh One!

Strange you bring up this point... Most of my friends wouldn't look at Linux either, and ironically it was Knoppix that converted two of them... mainly because my school runs a closed network and you can't change the desktop backgrounds or even play MS 3d pinball...

See if you can find a system of comparable specs that you can set up (temporarily if need be) in Linux... then see where his "benchmarks" get 'im.

Hmm... How can someone benchmark a windows vs linux puters!?
