Ok, here's the deal.
I have a Lucent Winmodem on COM3, i've told Kppp to point to ttyS2, i've created a hard link from /dev/ttyS2 to /dev/modem, I've tried everything I can.
It appears in the PCI manager, but it seems that RH just won't find it. I get 'The Modem is busy'/'the modem is unavailable' errors.
What can I do to manually start up, and set up my modem?

AFAIK, you can't use winmodems with linux. it's been awhile since i've messed with modem support in linux, but winmodems aren't "hardware" modems. they dump off the processing requirements usually taken care of by the modem itself onto the CPU. linux doesn't accept this. thus, you need a true hardware modem to work with linux.
like i said, it's been a while since i've encountered this issue, and maybe someone out there knows a way around it. if so, i'd be interested to hear it myself.

Where can I find good, cheap, linux-compatible modems?
Any thoughts?

http://www.mwave.com/mwave/doallsearchl.hmx?UID=&CID=&updepts=MDM&DName=Modems
search for the term "linux" on this page. there are a couple listed there. also check places like www.pricewatch.com, www.pricegrabber.com, and www.froogle.com.
basically, you don't want anything called a "winmodem" or "softmodem".

I have a Conexant Software Modem, but this site should point you in the right direction.

I also have RH9 and HSF modem and I'm on the internet right now, so I know that you can do it. And after I found out where to get Drivers from. It's really pretty simple to do.

Winmodem should work. I have PCTEL winmodem and I set it up with redhat and crux and both work fine with download 5.5kb/upload 4.4kb. First thing is to find a suitable driver(s) for it, then read some related docs. And don't forget to read redhat docs, you may find some good tips.:p

I got my crappy old Conexant winmodem working under SuSE (pain in the butt) and Mandrake 9.0 (it was set up automatically during the install). However, winmodems aren't worth the headache in my opinion. Seriously consider investing in a quality real modem or if it's available in your area, get cable or dsl - network card detection under Mandrake is a breeze.

Do you know what chipset the modem uses? If it's a pci card, do:
lspci

Well, i did lspci, and it tells me that it is a Lucent Microelectronics 56K WinModem (rev 01)
I'm just going to go ahead and get a serial modem, and take out the winmodem so I have more PCI card room.
