hello,
did you use xf86config to create the /etx/X11/XF86Config file? There is an opion there to selec the defaul, you may also use ctrl alt + to toggle between resolutions.

hello,
i don't have the slightest idea of what "XFree86 - configure" is, is it the same as xf86config? I don't think so. anyway, if you email me i can send the section from mine which i know works, it is in the screeen section of the file /etc/X11/XF86Config.

XFree86 -configure detects your hardware and creates a XF86Config file automatically. That works fine but it does not allow for lower resolutions. xf86config is the old standby but it can be pretty intimidating. That will allow you to set a default color depth and resolution.

Here is one way to add resolutions. Edit the file /etc/X11/XF86Config-4. Scroll to Section Screens, go to the color depth you are using, look for the line Modes, enter new resolutions in the order you want to use them using "resolution", ie. "640x480" "1280x1024". It will look like Modes "640x480" "1280x1024". When running XFree86 use Ctrl - and Ctrl + to switch between resolutions.
