What's other folks' experience in using Gnome?

I read that SuSe didn't put much effort in integrating the Gnome environment. It certainly appears to be the case on my installation. While KDE (and pretty much any other desktop or wm) works quite smoothly, running Gnome is a crashfest of amusing proportions.

Basically, I'm trying to decide whether SuSE is at fault here, or whether I should write Gnome off as a bug-ridden piece of crap.

Depends on what version of Gnome your running.

My opinion is that the 1.4 series was a mess, in certain areas. Overall it wasn't too bad but mostly the panel was very broken

The 2.x series has proven to be much more stable. I have had considerably less problems with 2.x then 1.4

i personally feel that KDE is a lot worse than Gnome in terms of being buggy.

i don't even keep Qt / KDE on my system any more.

I'm not a user of KDE or GNOME, but have you considered the possiblity that your problem might have to do with a hardware or configuration conflict?

I use IceWM and keep KDE just for the helpful configuration tools. KDE is also much more friendly to Windows users.
