Why is it so difficult to get OpenGL programs to run under Mandrake 8 with a Nvidia card? I have to run the program as root, manually startx from run level 3, and do a mexican hat dance around my linux box in order to get ANYTHING running opengl to run. Is this a known problem with mandrake or is my problem unique? WTF

I heard that if you use kdm it breaks the opengl of the system. If you are using kdm switch to gdm.

Well at this point I will try anything, how do I switch to gdm?

Just change /etc/inittab so the first uncommented line looks like this:

id:3:initdefault:

Other then this one odd problem which only happens if you use kdm you just need to install the two rpms on mandrakes site and opengl works fine. I'm sure this will be streamlined more in 8.1 but if you think it's tough now you should of tried it back when hardware opengl just started working with 3dfx cards :-)

I am a omplete noob, but i just got it working today, even started playing Quake III. I D/L'ed the Mandrake 8.0 images, burned them in Win2K, made room on one of my disks w/Partition Magic, booted off the CD and installed. I did something wrong the first time I installed the NVidia drivers, but I tried again, and it works really well this time, and that's under KDE. All I did was follow the readme's.This is kinda fun, and very challenging.
