Yep, GIF's, not GIFT's...
Seems the Unisys patent for GIF's expired yesterday, at least in North America (That's the 4.5% bit :D )
(See http://www.unisys.com/about__unisys/lzw/ )
Fortunately, GIF's aren't subject to the Unisys patent in Finland, so I guess I was never prevented from using them..If only PNG's had animation, my Avatar could use those instead.
Users in UK, Canada, France, Germany and Italy will have to wait, unfortunately.

Though I don't know whether the forum software will accept them for avatars, probably not though. :(

Yeah, GIFs are OK to use again!
And of course the site runs off Linux ;)

No, it only accepts GIF and JPG. It doesn't even accept PNG, what a shame :(

I thought png was a better format anyway? More compression, lossless vs lossy gifs, etc. It was just that gifs do anims and are much more widely distributed that make them more common. But even MS Paint will write png's now, so we'll see what happens.

But I'm not sure if IE will render partially-transparent PNGs yet. Not that that's an excuse of any kind, but well... yeah.
It is a shame that it won't take it. I wonder if you started a thread in the forum suggestions area, if that might get something done about it?

Who cares if IE cant render it ? You should be using an open source alternative anyways :)

Oh I am! (Mozilla CVS, last checked out on Apr. 2)
That was part of the reason I said it wasn't a good excuse, too.
However, at work, it's a different story... silly Win2K networks. And I know, there are Windows versions of Mozilla, but I haven't gotten the guts to actually install one yet.
