Hi all.

i have a simple linux machine connected to my cable router.

linux ip is from cable router dhcp server.

does my hostname have to be:-

'purekrome'

or

'purekrome.vic.telstra.net.au'

or does it depend on some particular setting in the DHCP server?

The hostname should contain a line defining the host name of the workstation.

It should be the client ID for it.

But I haven't used cable net connection before.

i would guess that your hostname would be 'purekrome'. i do not know how telstra.net works things.. but AT&T supplied me with a host name, that has really nothing to do with my account name. i.e. my email address is not hostname@home.com (home is AT&T's domain for cable users) but accountname@home.com. the only time i have ever inputed my host name was when i was installing linux and it asked for it.

yeah.

the only time i've eva been asked my hostname was also when i installed mandrake.

i just wasn't sure what people did for their hostnames, on their home play around computers, especially when they had DYNAMIC ip's.

ok. i might change mine back to 'purekrome', not 'purekrome.some.isp.domain.thingy'
