for those suse users, does suse have pre-compiled binaries in their cd packages?
does anyone have any problems with the 8.2 version? probably due to their more strict compiler that eventually causes the installation to fail?

Hello, Shadowrider.

I am sorry to hear that you are having problems with SuSE Linux. I am running SuSE 8.2 Professional, and it's been the most stable version that I have used in the 8.X series.

I can only speak from experience, Shadowrider, about the installation packages on the CD-ROMs. (I use the DVD, by the way.) The packages that I have installed from SuSE's DVD have been RPMs of source code, and I have never had any problems with the installation and updating. (I have also installed programs, downloaded from the Internet, from source, generally without problems, as long as the programs were relatively recent and did not have old-style headers.)

I am not sure, from your message, Shadowrider, but are you saying that you have attempted to install 8.2 and that the installation always fails? (I am definitely a newbie, but I will take the risk and ask you, at what point in the process does the installation fail? Does the installation fail at the same point on each attempt?)

Anyone with more experience, please feel free to add responses to this thread! I am definitely a newbie! :)

Cordially,

David

oh i didn't try 8.2 yet.
but i've heard some complains about the installation in 8.2 version.
some have said that the compiler it uses is more strict than the previous versions, which causes some packages to fail to be installed. i was just hoping to confirm this with the suse users.
thx for the info though david.;)

Hi, Shadowrider.

I have never had a package fail to install with SuSE 8.2. It is, in many ways, a major improvement over 8.1.

Cordially,

David
