eh
ok so i got an emachines 533id2 with an onboard cs4281 sound card, my heaphone jack on it owrks but the mic/lineout dont regardless of mixer settings and whether i use the kernel driver or alsa. I'm usin slack8.1 with gcc3.2 and kernel 2.4.20

Try using an ALSA driver.
Is the line out non-functional regardless of input source (audio CD, MP3, system sounds, etc.)?

no sound from anything not even alsa...maybe i fried something.... i can get heaphone jack to work, but thats it...

If I remember correctly... The 428x series on-board deals are the same ones Digital used on the PC-5000's. I recal having a similar problem, the speaker-out (that worked under windows) wouldn't work but the headphone jack (on the side of the machine) would and so did the line out. Maybye it is a similar problem that rests in the architecture and drivers themselves....
