I'm also somewhat of a newbie and I've taken a liking to Mandrake. Lots of good wizards, control centers, GUI front ends to things. Those may help when you're getting started with Linux.

if you want a free easy to use distro, my vote would go to either mandrake 9.1 or RH 9
Mandrake is the most user friendly distro to setup at least right out of the box. IMHO but if you have some cash give lindows a shot. I hear it is very easy to setup & use. I am using RH9 at the moment but Mandrake is great too:D

The easiest Linux I have found to use so far is SUSE, by far. I rember SUSE 6.1 being easier than Red Hat 5.2, 8.0, and 9.0. I am currently using redhat 9.0 for a class, but the SUSE 8.2 I used last was easier than REdHat. The biggest thing I found was that SUSE automatically mounted Fat32 Filesystems and that YAST Made making changes to existing installs or system settings a breeze!

Ya, I started with linux not to long ago and I tried suse 8.2 and redhat9. SuSE has YAST, which helps you out a but, I eventually chose redhat9. Its easy to use, and IMO its a good distro.

Mandrake is great - it gives the expert power while still letting the novice understand everything. Knoppix is good in that it does all the hardware detection for you, but the knx-harddisk script isn't graphical yet. Ummm.... Lindows?!?! I think of Lindows as kind of like AOL for Windows, easy to use, but overprized and a waste (no offense to users).

I agree Mandrake is a great first step.

It gives you some nice GUI tools etc, great installer, and it still allows the full power and freedom of Linux.

I am fairly advanced and I still use it. I am developing a Linux game using it too.

Check out 9.1 sometime. I don't think you'll be disappointed.
