Mouse quits working on logout...

I have Mandrake 8.1 and I normally use
Gnome, but when I logout my mouse quits working and I have to reboot in order for it to come back. Its a Microosft wheel mouse...

Anyway its really anoying when I want to logout and log back on as root I have to totally reboot every time.

any ideas?

Not sure how to fix the mouse but why do you logout and back on again to get root, why not just su to root?
