Actually i'm trying to network Slackware + XP so to share the internet. I Followed this tutorial i came across somehow:

http://blacksun.box.sk/tutorials.php/id/57

I have managed to get Slackware 9.0 set up okay i think, and the boot messages even show my network card. My problem is with XPHome. In my network connections i have 'Local Area Connection' - '1394 Connection' (whatever that is) and also i have ended up with a thing called a network bridge which refuses to be deleted since i created it. Anyway on the Local Area Connection is tells me that my network cable is unplugged, but is isn't...can anyone tell me why it says this. I've configured this connection as the tutorial above said and still it doesn't work. The 1394 is disabled and have just disabled the Network Bridge aswell. Pinging brings back nothing also.

Actually i don't even know what i'm talking about anymore. Can anyone shed some light on what i am doing wrong. If you need more info no probs.

Cheers for any help..

Even the damn networking wizard says it has found disconnected network hardware and that i should plug in my network cables, which i have!!

The cable i am using is the same one i use to connect to the university network while on campus, is this the right cable?

Cheers again

How are the two computers connected? Are you using a crossover cable or regular cables going to a hub/switch?

Just one straight cable going from the laptop to the desktop.

Ok, without the hub/switch you need to use a crossover cable.

So i take it the cable i use to connect to the university network isn't a crossover cable? I'm not to hot when it comes to networking!!

That most likely is not a crossover cable. They look exactly alike but one end of a crossover cable is wired differently.
That's why your XP box says there is no connection.

Cheers Homey, it doesn't say anywhere on the cable what it is so i was unsure. I'll pop down to the local comp store tomorrow and get a crossover cable.

Thanks for all your help..
