I am just about ready to setup my firewall box and was wondering which one I should go with. FreeBSD or Debian. Is one better then the other or more secure for this and stable?

Why not try both? :).
Just a note: FreeBSD isn't Linux. It's BSD.

Don't bet the farm on this, because I'm really just going from memory, but I recall hearing that OpenBSD was built with security in mind. Apparently a team has gone through the kernel time and time again, line by line and addressed a lot of security concerns.
And no, BSD isn't Linux, but it's related. Technically, Debian is and isn't linux. It's a GNU OS which uses the Linux kernel. But hey...it's all *nix so it's all good :)

FreeBSD is real real fast, man. I love it. Itīs what I use on any firewall I ever install. Oh and firewall configuration is so much easier in FreeBSD than in linux (personal opinion here, no flames)

Both are good choices and similar using SysV. Yeah so why not both?
