While completing my first install of Gentoo 1.4 r5 (abiet my second attempt :D) I had a bit of a snag. I was at step 24, creating my lilo boot disk and I lost power.

I had completed all steps up until this point, so I am wondering if someone can give me a little guidance on how to complete the install.

I have already attempted the following...

Booted using the Stage 1 CD
Activated Swap
mounted hda3, hda1
chroot steps
verified settings entered previously
etc-update
exited chrooted shell
umount and reboot

And now the fun begins...

When I boot the box, I get the lilo prompt screen, select linux, linux begins to load, I see a message flash and the box reboots. the message appears to say "BIOS data check"

I am new enough to linux that I thought that I would avoid "tinkering" until obtaining some advice. (The compile stages on this P233-mmx is not exactly what you'd call quick)

Thanks

Dave

PS. I started with Debian Woody and had no problems with it on this box. It is often suggested on this forum that someone pick a project and jump in. Gentoo was mine.

While searching the forums at Gentoo I found reference to "BIOS data check". Searched with that text and found many similar issues. One that I found seemed identical to the problem that I am having.

It indicated that the probable cause is that the kernel could not be found/is bad. It then suggested a recompile.

My questions then are...

Can I test this by copying the kernel from the bootable CD and then restarting?

Does this sound prudent?

Is the kernel called bzImage?

Who invented liquid soap and why?
:p

I suppose you might try copying the kernel over, and yes, it's called bzImage. It's worth a shot trying to reinstall LILO as well if that doesn't work.

http://inventors.about.com/library/inventors/blsoap.htm
" William Shepphard first patented liquid soap on August 22, 1865. The first modern liquid soap was introduced in 1980 by Minnetonka Corporation. Minnetonka cornered the liquid soap market by buying up the entire supply of the plastic pumps needed for the liquid soap dispensers. The Colgate Company acquired the liquid soap business from Minnetonka and renamed the product Softsoap in 1987. "

Does that answer the liquid soap question? :p

Just to completete this thread, the problem was indeed with the kernel. I had left the processor defaulted and not selected mine.

I felt like such a bonehead when I spotted that one.

I did however learn something very important about liquid soap. :D

Thanks o0zi.

i'm trying to install gentoo from stage one and during the boostrap i believe my connection got dropped while d/ling the source for "glibc-2.3.1.tar.gz" and bootstrap stopped. do i have to start all over or can i salvage some of it? (it's a p 200mhz w/ mmx so it took a LONG time to compile) the line "emerge (8 of 9) sys/libs/glibc-2.3.1-r4 to /" gives me hope. could i just emerge something? i did "bootstrap >> ~/gbootlog" so i have it if that will help things. if any more info would be helpful i will post it

ps- this is my first gentoo so i apologize in advance

i asked on #gentoo 'cause i've never had it happen to me and someone there said if you restart it, it will start over again (i'm not conviced of this).

however, if it was me, i'd try to salvage it.

the first thing i'd do is rerun the bootstrap and see if it's smart enough to continue on its own.

if it doesn't work, then i'd start from scratch as you don't want to start with a fscked-up system.
