I AM NEW TO LINUX!
Just installed Linux-Mandrake 7.2 Complete. Had to take the hard drive off the built in Promise ATA 100 controller and put it on the built in ATA 66 controller to do this. Was told 7.2 supported ATA 100 but after purchase found out that the Kernel 2.2.17 doesn't support the built in Promise Controller-(Asus A7V Motherboard).Have had someone helping me out via e-mail: told me to install on the ATA 66 and then connect online to do the software update to Kernel 2.4 which now supports the onboard Promise ATA 100 Controller. The problem now is that I cannot get online-(With Linux)-have all my settings, addresses etc for my Ethernet card, router & cable modem-all work fine in Windows 98SE & BeOS.Origially was trying to install 7.1- was told my Mandrake that I needed 7.2-found that out on the web anyhow before they finally got back to me via their e-mail support.Got another e-mail after telling them that I had the same problem with 7.2-they told me I needed "special install instructions" for the ASUS A7V motherboard-which they would supply after I registered the new product-(which I did)- in fact just received them- involves a lot of command prompt work- (not my specialty!) (Just read these instructions-my system configuration is different than the one Mandrake used to make things more confusing to me).The conflicts revolve around IRQ 9-This is were my Kingston 10/100 Ethernet adapter & my Creative PC-DVD Encore Dxr3 card are allocated along with 2 USB Host Controllers -(this is the same as in Windows which also has ACPI IRQ Holder for PCI IRQ Steering & SCI IRQ used by ACPI Bus).DO NOT WANT TO SCREW UP MY WINDOWS SETUP IN ANY WAY BEFORE I GO ANY FARTHER! Installing BeOS last week and now Linux is for learning those Op Systems. With that said I've never changed IRQ allocations before. My question then is can I thru the Bios change the IRQ allocation for my Ethernet card from IRQ 9 to IRQ 3 which is set up for COM Port 2-which I'm not using-I know that Com 2 would have to be disabled-not even sure how to do that at the moment-would the Ethernet card work on that IRQ in Linux AND in Windows and BeOS also? Is this feasible? I have my PCI cards exactly where I want them- WINDOWS & BeOS work fine- so moving the cards is not an option.
