Methinks it's time to start writing letters, it's just too *** bad the DOJ wussed out on the antitrust case

Did we ever need antivirus software in the first place?

It's not for desktops, it's for mail servers...
They just had to love taking a poke at Linux while playing the assimilation game.

It's aimed at cleaning viruses out of traffic passing through the servers, the idea is that if the virus gets cleaned out at the server where it can't affect the OS, it never makes it to the desktop where it can.

No, people attach scripts and things that attack via weaknesses in Outlook and such. Granted that's attacking WinDoze clients, but they could just as easily nuke your home directory if they get serious about attacking Linux. Getting rid of that kind of stuff @ the mail server regardless of what the client is, is the right thing to do. Of course that's in the business environment, where I'd desperatly like Linux to gain ground ;)
I don't have a clue if that's actually feasible, but html enabled email clients (besides being evil) might well make that possibls.
The whole point of the original post was just to point out that the redminians are buying something to make it their own that once was a tool for Linux. Taking it away from Linux in the process. Sorry, but that standard M$ method of operation gets me steamed.
Sad to say, but I work for a large corp. that uses WinDoze and I've been on the cleanup side of that crap. I have to admin on a WinDoze domain until I can come up with something more to my liking...

First, (as someone mentioned) not all are for mail servers. As a virus propagates it passes through non-mail servers too ya know. This is a very good product in that it prevents viruses from reaching clients. I have yet to see a "real" antivirus program for GNU/Linux. Most if not all don't provide any real protection for Linux beyond a few defintions. As I wrote at Linux.com, many include numerous Windows-only viruses in their "protects Linux against" list in order to scare people with an obvious lack of intelligence.

Who cares!?! There are two or three dozen identical products out there. Plus it's not an instant death. MS claims it will support all contracts until the end of the years.
You can read my comments (http://newsvac.newsforge.com/newsvac/03/06/12/1729226.shtml) about this at Linux.com
The most intelligent article I have read about this was at The Register.

The Register is a great place for information and they (unlike numerous other sources) don't get all panicky about every little move someone makes.
