I have a question about how the kernel files are labeled on ftp://ftp.kernel.org
linux-2.3.99-pre9.tar.gz
what is the pre9, what does it mean, does it make a difference, how???
Thanks in advance....

major.minor.patchlevel
so 2.3.99pre9 is major 2, minor 3 (odd=dev even=stable) and patch level 99pre9, which is "god its sooo close to being stable...".

So would I be better off with 2.4 ????
Thanks

well the ones marked "pre" are generally marked "pre" because they aren't deemed "stable" yet. Check on www.kernel.org (http://www.kernel.org) on the bottom. It will tell you the latest stable release. Use that if you want to be on the safe side :). Use the Beta if you want to be "cutting" edge, and the pre-patch if you want to be "bleeding" edge
