Heeelp!
I most desperately would like to install Linux on my (Mac, G3, Pismo) computer (preferably external) but I can't use cd-roms (the internal drive only likes dvds & it's impossible to boot from the writer) could (pleeeease) anyone suggest something I could
do (without cd)?
I'm most grateful for ... any information
(I'm a Newbie obviously, hopefully my worries aren't completely pathetic, I want to keep my pismo)

It might be possible to boot from a floppy and start the install that way.You might also want to look into a network type install.

Kevinalm has the right idea. :)
This thread (http://justlinux.com/forum/showthread.php?threadid=102896) covers both methods pretty nicely.

Well, you have two options.
The first is to get a floppy-based distro (if you have a floppy drive). I've had very good luck with Tiny Linux (It's Slackware-based, though, so the install is *NOT* user-friendly.). If you get Tiny Linux, feel free to PM me with installation questions. There are several distros to choose from, so have fun! Tiny Linux is at http://tiny.seul.org/en/i.html .
The other option would be a network install (though I'm not sure if this is possible without a floppy, or something. Can you do a "network startup", using an iso?)

Thanks mage492 for the offer (for support) but trying to install
something announced as not-user-friendly sounds quite beyond my abilities (which are most humble).
My baby hasn't got a floppy drive and isn't connected to anything (which is why I 'need' Linux).
Isn't there really any way I could access the hd other than booting from external?
*I tried (differently) to access an os (lower than the one installed) on a zip disk (usb) and on the original cd (firewire).
And the acknowledgement even went as far as it first spat out the cd and then the disk (remarking that it didn't like the system).
Which is a great step forward from the complete ignorance it showed before.*
Thanks everyone!

How about network booting? I've had no experience with it, so I can't help you there.
Just an idea.
(Edit - "isn't connected to anything"... I take it that a network connection isn't possible?)

true! the poor thing is all alone at home (and me at the office) and has no idea what goes on in the world (no www-connection).
: there's no tv or phone line to where I live, we do have electricity though:)
hmm... yes, there doesn't seem to be a way I could avoid...
having to (illegaly) sneak in the school I went to and misuse some of the machines they have (unfortunately there is discuragement from using ethernet with mine...)
