How can I connect to the internet from the console? I run Mandrake 8.0 with kde on my 2 home computers and connect with kppp, but I would like to set up internet connection sharing through an old Pentium 1 that I haven't installed X on.

I also would like to send and receive e-mail from this box. How can I do this? Is it though the command line or via a console application? or both? how?

Many Thanks

Not sure about Mandrake, but in Debian, you use pppconfig and pon / poff programs from cli to connect or disconnect with dialup.

For Cable or DSL you just need to set up your nic and routing tables (through CLI) using ifconfig / route commands, and dhcp if you need it. Have a look in the NHFs

man ifconfig

man route

Lynx is text browser

If this machine is to be firewall/internet gateway you should consider something like SootmWall just it's easy configurability etc...

I agree with lm72 on this one. SmoothWall (http://www.smoothwall.org) would be an excellent choice for the old Pentium, but don't use it for any mailserver (or other services) though.
It's a firewall - and a darn good one - and should *not* have other services running on it.
You can however have a server connected to it that is separated from your LAN, and still protected.

On the other hand, power consumption (your electricity bill) should be considered at any time since this setup would probably run 24/7?

Cheers :)
