I have an IBM 300PL (PII 400 Mhz) with 448 Meg of ram. I also have a Booktree TV card (STB) and a 6 gig hard drive and a 120 gig hard drives. I installed Mandrake 9.1 and all seemed to go well. I reboot and I get the error "Could not start process, unable to create io-slave, too many open files" when KDE is loading. I hear the sound server load, but do not see any of the box that shows the progress as it loads, Help. I am hopeing to be able to use this as a workstation and an MP3 server for my Network.

at the login screen if you hit ctrl+alt+f1 you should be taken into text mode from here login and cd to /var/log have a look at XFree86-4.log file for any errors then post them, if you cant see and or dont know what your lookin at post the log file, also have you tried login into a different window manager gnome, fluxbox, blackbox etc? if so does the same thing happen?

Not sure but I think the onboard vidio is shot. It seems to work without graphic display. I put in a new vidio card and it works like a charm! So it may have been a bad vidio card. Good thing I do not throw anything away from they systems I tear down.
