...or, how do I do the browse network thing?

Okay, I've installed SuSE 7.2 on two PCs, I can ping between the two machines, but can't browse between them.

Oddly, I've set up Samba on one server to allow communication to my Win98 machine, and it works fine!! But can I get the two Linux boxes to talk to each other (beyond pinging)? No.

Any help, gratefully appreciated.

i think you either need to set up the samba server on both machines or at least get samba client going
www.samba.org (http://www.samba.org) should help also

Hang on. I'm not concerned about getting Win98 to see both machines (forget I've got a win98 machine for now). The issue is to get pure Linux browsing going between the two Linux boxes. Surely that shouldn't require Samba?

You might want to look into NFS. It stands for Network filesystem and its how two linux boxes communicate with each other. You said you set up samba so NFS should be no problem ;)

Theres a nice HOWTO on how to do it (hehe) at www.linuxdoc.org (http://www.linuxdoc.org), of course, if you need any help, you can always post your questions here

I think you may have put me on the right track. When I get home tonight I'll have a go at setting up the NFS on the two servers.

I managed to get NFS working...!! :D

Thank you for that pointer. It took a little while, but I've got both machines set up on it now, and I can transfer files between them. The only issue now is that my networks communication speed seems to be on the slow side (it's supposed to be 100Mbps, but it's performing worse than a 10Mbps, and with lots of collisions...) :(
