did you run the media check to make sure your ISO image/media(cd) were ok? if you have a bad iso this can cause all kinds of problems.

to run the media check do this

at the boot prompt type linux mediacheck

this command will allow you to verify that your cd's are ok. if the media check fails you will need to download some new ISO images, I would recommended using a different download site then the one you used previously.

for help with the media check look here http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/linux/RHL-9-Manual/install-guide/s1-x86-starting.html

you may also want to verify that your iso images are ok even before you burn them to a CD. check out this link for help with that http://www.linuxiso.org/viewdoc.php/verifyiso.html

please post back if you need me to clarify anything for you. Good media is the first step to a good install:cool:

You want to burn the cd from the iso image, not burn the iso image onto the cd. Most cd burning software gives you the option to burn a cd from an iso image. This will make the cd bootable. You need to do that for all three discs. Good luck! :)

so the CD's for both distro's are bootable? and they show up on your desktop when you put them in your CDrom while booted in windows? is windows able to read the disk? ie if you doubble click the disk do files show up on the disk? have you looked at the hardware compatiblity list for both Mandrake & RH?
http://hardware.redhat.com/hcl/?pagename=main
above is a link to the RH hcl & here is the one for mandrake http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/hardware.php3
I would check to make sure that each version of the distro you are trying to install supports things like your motherboard and video card right out of the box so to speak

yup, motherboard and video card are supported by red hat and mandrake. My sound card isn't or maybe it is but I didn't see it.

Sound Card
Manufacturer: Avance
Model: Avance AC'97 Audio for VIA (R) Audio Controller

I am really tired of windows and want to use linux ;)

what program did you use to burn your iso's in windows? I prefer Nero burning rom:cool: do the CD's show up in windows? ie if you put them into your cdrom drive does windows mount them? can you see that there are files on the disk? did you try the install without your soundcard installed? just a thought or is the soundcard intergrated into your mother board? ie onboard sound
