Install suns 1.3.1_01 JRE http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.3/jre/download-linux.html
After installing it you just need to make a link for it "ln /usr/java/jre1.3.1_01/bin/java /usr/bin/java -s -f"
Then run the LimeWire installer again and it should work.

Icculus, if you notice malakin said:

ln /usr/java/jre1.3.1_01/bin/java /usr/bin/java -s -f

that is what you would type to make the link.

The man page for symlink will explain it better than I can.

man symlink

and

man ln

alright... sorry.. no need to come of sounding so rude, i was just trying to help.

Now making a link is basically the equivalent of making a shortcut in windows.. say for instance you have a program that you have to type ****ing****thisnameislong to run. well you can type

ln -s ****ing****thisnameislong another

that way you only have to type another..

understand?

Linux just like windows only executes programs that are in the PATH. When you install Java it put the java executable in this folder "/usr/java/jre1.3.1_01/bin/java" which is not in the PATH. So you need to create a link from "/usr/bin" directory which is in the PATH so when your program tries to run java Linux knows where to find it. A link is similar to a shortcut as was said.

Installing LimeWire is fairly simple, java is on the only tricky part. You've already figured this out but for anyone elses benefit after correctly installing suns java JRE, all you need to do is download the LimeWireLinux.bin file and type "sh LimeWireLinux.bin" from the same directory as the file and don't forget the case sensitivity. This will run the installer and everything should just work.

ok 90 % of that i understand and i thank you whole haertedly for helping me understand it in a prescise way .

now this is what im confused on ..

i have the folder
file:/usr/java/jre1.3.1_01/bin
in there there is what looks like a shortcut named "java" i took it made a copy and put it in the usr/bin folder thinking that when it called java it would point it to where it needs to be .
i must be wrong cause it didnt work and claims there is no java on comp . i replaces the shell file "java" that was there frist and im back to square one .. seeing java but giving errors , can you possible help with this section ? i think i understand the theory behind it . just the physhical act is eluding me. once i see it once itll click ..

I knew I had seen another post concerning Limewire and Java in Software some weeks ago.

Hopefully this will help (http://www.linuxnewbie.org/cgi-bin/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=3&t=005453) as it has the exact link you need. At least I hope it does.

Did you do this?

ln -s /usr/java/jre1.3.1_01/bin/java /usr/bin/java

ls -al /usr/bin/java

should show it's linked to /usr/java/jre1.3.1_01/bin/java

So /usr/java/jre1.3.1_01/bin/java is the original and /usr/bin/java is the 'shortcut' or 'also know as'.

If that works, then try installing Limewire again.

ln -s /usr/java/jre1.3.1_01/bin/java /usr/bin/java

wheni do that it says the file exsists

ls -al /usr/bin/java

gives me
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 95 Jul 17 12:00 /usr/bin/java*

still wont work , give a java error :(

To me that indicates it points to itself.

My java is installed in /opt/java-1.3 with a symlink to /usr/java

So when I do ls -al /usr/java I get

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 13 Sep 10 02:23 /usr/java -> /opt/java-1.3

Did you not copy jre1.3.1 to /usr/bin/java as you stated earlier on? If so, then I would suggest you delete whatever you copied over. Be careful though.

What does Limewire say you need for Java and where does it expect to find it?
