i helped my friend install a linux partition on his millenium ibm. Now he wants to remove windows me and install windows 98 because he couldnt get his nic to work in millenium. Sooo he seems to blame me for everything now :)
So we want to uninstall everything and start fresh because 98 wont install over me, and it wont just go another partition. We have deleted the linux partition and now the me partition is left, but it wont let us delete it. Fdisk wont let us delete the partition, it just says disk wont lock. Any advice is appriciated

When you installed ME, did you choose an option to save all the info for Windows 98? If so, there is a way to boot from the floppy and to revert to Windows 98. I had a similar experience with ME and had to remove it this way. If you didn't select this option, however, I don't know of a way to return to 98.

yea, it(win me) came installed on his computer with only a recovery disk not the actual operating system disk.

knavely - I'm not positive about this, but if you can get ahold of the Norton Rescue Disks that come with/in a retail box of Norton SystemWorks (there are 3 of them), there is a program on there called Disk Editor that may allow you to unlock that disk. That's all I can think of to do if you can get at it with fdisk... Good luck.

First off, what NIC is it that won't run under ME but will work under 98?
Does he have the Win ME boot disk? The Win ME boot disk is just a means by which to access a dos prompt. Once you're there you can format the c drive from the boot disk and switch over to the 98 cd and install 98 on the existing partition.

its a d-link 550 i believe. I dont know the details, but i think the drivers werent compatable, he was mucking around for a while and finaly resorted to this solution. Well we were in the dos prompt using fdisk, and it just wouldnt let us remove the primary partition. Sooo i just used my Linux install disk with diskdrake to remove windose, lost everything but hes got 98 up and running. Thanks for all the help.
