Ok, I'm kind of stupid but what exactly do I put for all these settings?

http://www.asp-linux.com/r/upload/1/312.gif

All my computers are connected to a switch that connects to a cable modem.

I tried filling out the IP info only and put my own IP of my modem. It say something like "Error already a [something] that has this IP or something"

http://www.asp-linux.com/en/docs/install/tr03_8.shtml

Thanks a million for help in advance.

Also, I try to log on and it gives me the promt:

localhost name:

I type in a user account I made

Then it asks for "password:" and I type something, anything and it doesnt show. Like I push one button and the blinker doesnt move anywhere!

along with what scott_R said it also depends on how your ip addresses are assigned to your cable modem by your isp. ie either static or DHCP.

Your cable modem will use dhcp, and you don't need an IP number, dhcp should take care of that for you. The settings on the right side depend on your cable provider, and are probably the same as your other boxes.

As for passwords, they don't show so nobody can look over to see what you're typing. Just knowing the number of characters can be a lot of help to a cracker.

Well, its not DHCP I know that for a fact.

But what about my login error stuff? help?

Um, your hostname should probably be unique for your network. :)

and then the password for login doesn't seem like i am typing anything.

Does it matter if I put my domain in?

Well first, I would be happy if I could get the system started up into GUI mode. :(

Wow, I actually loged in. The admin account was root but here goes. I want to actually start up the system now.

This is what I get:

You have new mail.
[root@localhost root]#

AHHH WHAT DO I DO NEXT?

SORRY I'm very noob at Linux. This is my first install!!!

no problem. Just don't get too frustrated and give up. Learning to use linux can be a lot like learning to use computers the first time. You'll get the hang of it, but it'll take a little practice.

Anyway, if you set up your video card and monitor during the installation, you can try 'startx'. That should give you a gui. If it acts funny, your monitor starts smoking (just kidding), you can hit ctrl+alt+backspace, and kill the gui.

If it works, you'll probably find some stuff to finish setting up your computer. If you want to just use it (or read some help files), however, log in as a user so you don't accidently change something you didn't mean to. There's a lot more to learn, such as how to set it up to go autmatically into the gui, but that should be in the help documentation for ASP Linux (either online, or installed when you installed it).

When installing, it never promted me about my monitor or video card.

'startx' doesnt work when I type it. "bash: startx: command not found"

I can't really find any help docs on this matter. asp-linux.com's documents are very unclear.

ALL help is GREATLY appreciated.

Did you do a minimal install? If so, it might not have installed your gui. You'll want to look up how to install XFree86, and either gnome or kde. I've never used ASP, so I'm not exactly sure how the installation is setup, but there should be a way to install programs after you finish the initial installation.

Here's a link to setting up a gui, and other user docs that may help.

Setting up X-windows:
http://www.asp-linux.com/en/docs/guide/asp07_1.shtml

The rest of the user manual:
http://www.asp-linux.com/en/docs/guide/

It'll take a little time, but read through this manual (or at least skim it and get an idea about what sections cover what parts of your system.

Ok, I'll look around for that.

By the way, whats a good linux distro to use for me? U know how I'm noob. I'm trying to set up a CS server.

it tells me to type the command "Xconfigurator". I type it and the command is not found!

AHH!

Sorry, I can't help but laugh at that. :) Try something like redhat, mandrake or SuSE. Most distros are pretty easy to setup nowadays, and most have the same features. Also, those three are more mainstream, which means you'll have a lot more people jumping in with advice.

Anyway, it's time for me to turn in for the night, but good luck!:)
