I have the MSI KT4A mainboard (here (http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/mainboard/mbd/pro_mbd_detail.php?UID=442&MODEL=MS-6590)), which uses the KT400 chipset. It's fast, has a ton of features, works well in Linux and seems stable.

It comes with a Windows control panel that lets you overclock the CPU and AGP card on the fly.

Wow, thanks for the response. I just picked up a Soltek SL-75FRV, it was a pretty good deal, and I was looking for news about it. Thanks! All other replies still welcome.
P>S> AGP 8X support? Is there any? I'll search now.

I have the same board. Only one issue with this board: agpgart support in the kernel seems to be limited only to the 2.4.21-pre-x series as of now. This is easily remedied by either patching your kernel, or if you have an NVIDIA card, using the nvagp driver.

Hey, I have a radeon 9000 pro 64mb ddr agp 4x video card. Does anyone here think it's worth upgrading to a GeForce FX5200 128MB agp 8x? I hear they're not all that great, and was just looking for someone to confirm my opinion. I'm happy with the radeon, I just don't know if I'll be happier with the nvidia.

No, don't upgrade to an FX5200. If you go to a GeForce card, make it a GF4 Ti4200 or higher, or an FX5600 or FX5800.

The FX5200 cards are slower than the GF3 Ti500's, and for some people, they're slower than the GF2 GTS.

Hey Jymbo, I've been looking for someone with the same board. Does the onboard sound work? And isn't that the kernel that MDK 9.1 uses? Its what Im using now, so I figured I'd ask.
As or bwkaz, thanks for the reply. I returned it before I got your post. How do you feel the my current video card fairs? I like it, but is there S3TC support? I heard ATI started supporting it, but I don't know what card. I want to try playing UT2003, but I know it requires S3TC. I bought the cds already, and am really excited about my upgrade. This new system will sport an Athlon XP 2500 w/ 333mhz cpu bus (retail box with heatsink and 3 yr warranty). 1 1GB DIMM pc2700/333mhz, KT400 chipset, ata133 built in to board, 5pci, 1 agp 8x, two 40's one 80 and 1 60 BG drive all in the same box, a beautiful Antec power supply, 52X rewriteable drive. The works and an infrared port if I read the stats correctly. My case is really nice also. Antec Plus view 1000awg. I think I might have went over board. Im thinking of taking a picture of this machine and posting it. I think that would be cool. Posting pictures of your Rigs. (Man Im a nerd):p :D

My Soltek board didn't come with on-board sound, so I wouldn't know how to answer that. I do recommend, however, that you get yourself a SBLive! card...on-sale at Newegg.com for only $33 (retails for $79 at my local Fry's store). Kernel support for this card is solid (emu10k1). This card has worked flawlessly for me in Mandrake 9.1, Slackware 9, RedHat 8/9, Gentoo, and even the liveCD distros such as Knoppix and DynaBolic.

Yes, Mandrake 9.1 uses it's own 2.4.21-pre-x kernel, so you'll be fine using agpgart...just drop this line in /etc/rc.d/rc.local:

/sbin/modprobe agpgart

Actually, no, you don't need S3TC support for UT2k3 anymore. One of the recent patches did away with the requirement -- of course, if your drivers don't support it, then the game will run noticeably slower.

ATI has drivers for all of their cards, 8500 and up, that support S3TC (I think), but they are only working with glibc 2.2 and XFree86 4.1 and 4.2. They're not certified with glibc 2.3 or XFree86 4.3. They may work, but you'll have to do some major messing with them -- plus, they're RPM-only.

Basically, what ATI did was released drivers once, and then completely forgot about them.
