I'm running redhat 7.1 w/ KDE on a 233 Mhz P1 system with 128 megs of ram. I'm noticing that my system seems really slow especially when I'm dialed up to the internet? Is this normal or is there a problem.

This just doesn't seem right. I ran win200 server on this box before and it didnt' seem too slow, but now the processor is nearly always pegged even when I'm idle at the machine.

Any suggestions.

Thanks,

Rob

I would run RedHat with KDE on a 233 system. (Well, I might try) but RedHat wouldn't be my choice. I'd try Slackware or Debian. Or, just don't include KDE in that selection. Learn command line.

I would suggest you disable any unnecessary services.

why dont you try other desktop managers such as afterstep, windowmaker, or blackbox

or even gnome.

also what you may find is that certain browsers hog the machine more, konqueror seems ok, but mozilla is a git for resources

KDE is quite a big guy, takes up a lot of mememory, I would suggest using a leaner window manager like Blackbox -- this would free up more resources for you.

Also given the current low cost of RAM, if at all possible punch out your RAM as much as you can afford, 512mb and beyond is great.
The more RAM Linux has to more it purrs.

You would have a tough time getting more ram than 128 MB if it is 72 pin ram. If it is 168 pin ram then go nuts.

I would suggest gnome or window maker for your gui needs.

Also make sure you don't have stuff like ftp servers and telnet daemons installed if you don't need them
